It's a tale of lingering trauma, the search for truth, and a growing inter-dimensional war that begins to engulf the town.

So, let's dive into the maddening second season of this smash hit, shall we?

Stranger Things: Season 2 Recap: The Phenomenon Continues To Take Over

  • Season 2, Episode 1: "Chapter One: Madmax"

Set nearly a year after the events of Season 1, on Halloween 1984, the episode reintroduces the main characters.

Will Byers is struggling with visions of the Upside Down and a massive, shadowy, tentacled monster that looms over Hawkins.

Dr. Owens, the new director of Hawkins Lab, monitors Will's health, dismissing the visions as "anniversary effect" PTSD.

A new girl, Max Mayfield, an expert arcade gamer with the high-score "MADMAX," arrives at the school and immediately captivates Dustin and Lucas.

Meanwhile, Chief Hopper is secretly hiding Eleven in a remote cabin, feeding her Eggos and protecting her from the government, but Eleven is increasingly restless and isolated.

  • Season 2, Episode 2: "Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak"

Hopper forbids Eleven from going out on Halloween, leading to a major argument. The boys dress as Ghostbusters for trick-or-treating and are joined by Max. Will has another severe vision outside the arcade, where the shadow monster possesses him.

He tells Mike about his worsening episodes, making Mike realize the danger is far from over. Nancy, still grappling with Barb's death, gets drunk at a party and argues with Steve, revealing their relationship strain.

Later, Jonathan takes her home.

  • Season 2, Episode 3: "Chapter Three: The Pollywog"

Dustin finds a small, slimy, pollywog-like creature in his trash can and decides to keep it, naming it D'Artagnan ("Dart").

He hides it from the group, only to have Will recognize its sounds from his visions.

Elsewhere, Eleven sneaks out to the school to find Mike and, seeing him with Max, mistakenly believes they are flirting, fueling her jealousy and leading her to angrily use her powers to make Max fall off her skateboard.

Back in the cabin, Eleven discovers Hopper's hidden research on her biological mother, Terry Ives.

  • Season 2, Episode 4: "Chapter Four: Will the Wise"

Dart eats Dustin's cat, Mews, and escapes, forcing Dustin to realize it's a rapidly growing Demogorgon.

Hopper, investigating the mysteriously rotting pumpkin patches, finds an entrance to a massive underground tunnel system.

Will suffers his most intense possession episode yet; the shadowy creature enters his body and mind.

Joyce, desperate, uses his frantic drawings to communicate, which turn out to be a map of the tunnel system. The group realizes the monster is communicating through Will.

  • Season 2, Episode 5: "Chapter Five: Dig Dug"

Hopper ventures into the tunnels, which are covered in the Upside Down's root-like vines, and gets trapped.

Will, now possessed and referring to himself in the third person as a "spy," draws a new section of the map, leading Joyce and Bob to deduce where Hopper is trapped.

Bob, a former AV Club president, uses his knowledge of maps to guide them. Meanwhile, Nancy and Jonathan meet with conspiracy theorist Murray Bauman, intending to expose Hawkins Lab, and Nancy admits her relationship with Steve is over.

  • Season 2, Episode 6: "Chapter Six: The Spy"

Hopper is rescued from the tunnels and is brought to Hawkins Lab where the scientists, led by Dr. Owens, attempt to incinerate the tunnel vines.

Will, who can now see and feel the tunnels, suffers crippling pain when the fires are lit, confirming his connection to the Upside Down's hive mind.

Realizing Will is still a host for the entity, the group understands the monster is using Will as a spy.

When Will is exposed to the heat of the fire, he lashes out, directing the Demodogs to attack the lab, slaughtering numerous security guards and scientists.

  • Season 2, Episode 7: "Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister"

This standalone episode follows Eleven as she travels to Chicago in search of her past, using her mind-power to find her mother, Terry Ives. Eleven learns that Terry, catatonic from trauma, was a participant in the MKUltra experiments.

Through a vision, Eleven finds her "sister," Kali (Subject 008), a girl with the power to make others see things that are not there (illusions).

Kali encourages Eleven to embrace her anger and use her power for revenge against the "Bad Men" from Hawkins Lab, but Eleven ultimately decides to return to Hawkins to save her friends after sensing their distress.

  • Season 2, Episode 8: "Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer"

Mike correctly theorizes that the entity possessing Will is the Mind Flayer from Dungeons & Dragons.

The group realizes the only way to save Will is to force the monster out of him, which means heating him to a point the cold-thriving Upside Down creature cannot tolerate. They take Will to Hopper's cabin, tie him up, and blast the heat.

Joyce, Nancy, and Jonathan endure a terrifying ordeal as the Mind Flayer fights to stay, but the intense heat successfully exorcizes the monster from Will’s body.

Meanwhile, Steve steps up as a reluctant guardian for Dustin, Lucas, and Max, a role he embraces throughout the ensuing chaos.

  • Season 2, Episode 9: "Chapter Nine: The Gate"

With Will free, the group devises a two-part plan: Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy will burn the Mind Flayer-controlled tunnel system, while Eleven and Hopper will go to the Hawkins Lab to close the main gate using Eleven's full power.

Steve, Dustin, Lucas, and Max, now working as a team, lure the Demodogs away from the lab in a junkyard to buy Eleven and Hopper time.

Inside the lab, Eleven confronts the massive portal. Drawing on her focused power and rage, she levitates and uses all her psychic strength to seal the inter-dimensional breach shut, seemingly trapping the Mind Flayer and its army in the Upside Down.

Dr. Owens, having survived the attack, helps Hopper secure a legal birth certificate for Eleven, now Jane Hopper, allowing her to live a normal life.

Some Closing Thoughts

The second season of Stranger Things marked a significant expansion of the world, introducing the monstrous Mind Flayer, the Demodogs, and the deeper backstory of Eleven and her "siblings."

While we said a heartbreaking goodbye to the noble Bob Newby, we celebrated the return of Jane/Eleven and the forging of new relationships, most notably the father-daughter bond between Hopper and Eleven, and the romantic sparks between Lucas and Max.

The final shot of the Mind Flayer menacingly looming over the Upside Down version of Hawkins Middle School serves as a chilling promise: the door may be closed, but the evil is waiting.

The kids are safe for now, but the war for Hawkins is far from over, setting the stage for the dramatic conflicts to come in later seasons.
